I’m just a guy in SF who likes to bike… a lot, and who rustles up groups of friends and friends-of- for low-key* rides every few weeks, usually in the 20-70 mile range (a few favorite routes).
*Not racing, more focused on scenic routes, no rider left behind**: we wait for everyone at the top of major hills or confusing intersections, and we may stop for lunch or ice cream or a beer. People ride everything from old mountain bikes to carbon road bikes.
**But, for rides longer than about 50 miles, expect a somewhat brisker pace: we’ll still stop for an interesting landmark or a meal, but other than that we try to keep moving.
Even on an uphill, I might stop for blackberries.
